My name is Martin.
I’m a Dane living in Istanbul since 2014 - together with my partner Mehmet since 2017.
Istanbul is not just a city I write about. It is the city where I live my everyday life.
I take the ferry to and from work and my free time, buy groceries, drink coffee on the corner, follow construction sites, demolitions and reopenings - and return to the same places again and again, because the city keeps changing.
MitIstanbul.dk grew out of that life.
The blog is primarily written for a Danish and Nordic audience, but an English section is gradually being developed. Some articles may therefore still only be available in Danish while the English version continues to grow.
The site is meant as a place where Istanbul is explained, used and experienced - not simply described from a distance. Here, history, everyday life, practical experience and personal observations are brought together in one place.
It is not a classic news site.
But it is not a random travel blog either.
The ambition is to offer a nuanced, honest and practical perspective on Istanbul - for those visiting the city, those who have been here many times, or those who simply want to understand it a little better.
How MitIstanbul.dk is structured
The content is divided into three main categories:
Istanbul Explained
History, culture and context. Articles that dig a little deeper and try to explain the many layers of the city - without oversimplifying it.
Practical Istanbul
Guides and articles meant to be used in practice. Transport, museums, everyday logistics and the things visitors and residents typically encounter in Istanbul.
My Istanbul
Personal texts and observations from everyday life in the city. Atmosphere and personal experiences play a larger role here - but always with respect for facts.
The division is meant as a simple guide so readers can clearly see what kind of text they are reading.
How I work
The articles are based on my own observations, repeated visits and continuous attention to the city’s development. This is supplemented with research, publicly available documents, academic literature and both local Turkish and international sources.
When something is uncertain, debated or changing, I try to make that clear. I consciously distinguish between explanation, information and personal assessment.
Corrections and updates
Istanbul is constantly changing - and so is knowledge.
Factual errors are corrected as quickly as possible. Significant corrections or clarifications are marked at the end of the article with a date. Articles may be updated over time when new information becomes available.
If you notice something that should be corrected or nuanced, you are always welcome to get in touch.
Commercial content
mitistanbul.dk may contain affiliate links and references to products or services. When content is commercial in nature, it is clearly marked so there is no doubt about what is editorial and what is not.
Content is selected independently and does not influence the editorial assessments.
