Drinking Alcohol in Public in Türkiye - What Tourists Need to Know

For many travellers, a holiday isn’t complete without a cold beer on the beach or a glass of wine in the park while watching the sunset. That’s perfectly normal in many parts of Europe - but it isn’t necessarily the case in Türkiye.

Although alcohol is legal and served in thousands of restaurants, cafés, bars and beach clubs, you should think twice before opening a beer bought from a supermarket and sitting down on a public beach, in a park or along a promenade.
In several parts of Türkiye, the authorities carry out inspections where people drinking alcohol in public places risk being asked to leave the area or receiving an administrative fine.
A recent example comes from Karasu on the Black Sea coast. During a beach inspection, the Turkish Coast Guard removed people who were drinking alcohol from the area, while Turkish citizens were issued administrative fines.
Enforcement Varies Across Türkiye
How these rules are enforced depends very much on where you are. In some places the police may simply ignore it, while in others the rules are enforced much more strictly.
As a foreign visitor, you may not necessarily receive a fine. Instead, the police often choose to remove tourists from the area or take them to the local police station for an identity check. Either way, it is probably not how most people would like their holiday in Türkiye to begin - or end.
Enjoy Your Drink Where It Is Served
My advice is simple.
If you would like a beer, a glass of wine or a cocktail, enjoy it at a café, restaurant, beach bar or any other licensed venue where alcohol is legally sold and served.
It is by far the easiest way to avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary problems with the authorities.
After all, a holiday in Türkiye should be remembered for the right reasons - not for an unexpected visit to a police station.
