Most people associate Istanbul with mosques, bazaars and the Bosphorus. But the city is also home to a surprising number of beaches. Here’s my guide to the best places to swim around Istanbul - from the Black Sea coast to the Princes’ Islands.

When most people think of Istanbul, they think of mosques, bazaars, the Bosphorus and ferry rides. But it is actually possible to combine a city break with a day at the beach.
Situated between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul offers a surprising number of beaches. Some are located well outside the city centre, while others can be reached by metro, bus or ferry.
Naturally, the quality varies. Some are simple public beaches with lifeguards and changing facilities, while others are private beach clubs with sunbeds, music and entrance fees.
Before You Jump In
There are a few things you should know before heading to the beach.
The Black Sea
The Black Sea is beautiful, but it can also be dangerous. The currents along the coast around Kilyos and Şile are much stronger than many visitors expect, and drownings occur almost every summer.
If red warning flags are flying, stay out of the water.
The Bosphorus
You may occasionally see locals swimming in the Bosphorus, but I would not recommend it. The currents are strong, shipping traffic is heavy, and conditions can change quickly.
The Golden Horn
The water quality has improved significantly over the past few decades, but it is still not somewhere I would choose for a day of swimming.
Water Quality
Water quality at Istanbul’s official beaches is generally good, and authorities carry out regular testing throughout the summer season.
Following periods of heavy rain, some beaches may experience temporary issues. Always pay attention to local signs and any warnings posted at the beach.
Kilyos - Beach Clubs and Black Sea Beaches
Located on Istanbul’s European side, Kilyos is probably the city’s best-known beach area.
During summer, the beaches attract both locals and visitors, and several operate as beach clubs with DJs, concerts and special events. The atmosphere can be lively, but prices tend to be higher than elsewhere.
Kilyos remains one of the easiest places to enjoy a classic beach day without travelling too far from Istanbul.
Şile - A Seaside Escape on the Black Sea
On Istanbul’s Asian side lies Şile, around 60 kilometres from the city centre.
For decades, it has been a popular weekend destination for Istanbul residents and feels more like a small seaside town than a suburb of a city of more than 15 million people.
Here you’ll find several beaches, seaside cafés and a much more relaxed atmosphere than in Kilyos.
The Princes’ Islands
The Princes’ Islands are among my favourite places for a day away from the city.
Most visitors come for the peaceful atmosphere, historic villas and beautiful views across the Sea of Marmara. However, several of the islands also offer good swimming opportunities.
On Büyükada, you’ll find both public beaches and private beach clubs. The municipal Beltur Beach is often a good choice if you’re looking for reasonable prices and decent facilities.
Kınalıada also has several small swimming areas and rocky coves that are especially popular with locals.
Caddebostan and the Sea of Marmara Beaches
Many visitors are surprised to learn that there are beaches within Istanbul itself.
Along the Asian shoreline between Caddebostan, Suadiye, Bostancı, Maltepe and Kartal, you’ll find a number of designated swimming areas with lifeguards and facilities.
No, it is not the Mediterranean. But on a hot summer day, these beaches are a great place to cool off, and the views across the Sea of Marmara towards the Princes’ Islands are hard to beat.
Beltur Beaches
If I had to recommend one place to start, it would be Istanbul’s municipal Beltur beaches.
They are generally well maintained, reasonably priced and attract a mix of local families, young people and visitors. They may not be the most exclusive beaches in Istanbul, but they are often the most straightforward and accessible.
Is It Worth Going to the Beach in Istanbul?
When people think about beach holidays in Türkiye, they usually think of Antalya, Bodrum or Marmaris. Istanbul rarely makes the list.
Yet when summer temperatures climb, many Istanbul residents head for the water. Some make their way to the Black Sea, while others choose the Princes’ Islands or the beaches along the Sea of Marmara.
A beach holiday may not be the reason you visit Istanbul. But on a hot summer day, it is good to know the option is there.
