I didn't really have any great expectations when I stepped into İBB İtfaiye Müzesi. I'm not particularly interested in firefighting, but the museum actually surprised me.

The museum tells the story of Istanbul's fire brigade through different periods, with helmets, uniforms, fire hoses, tools and other equipment. There are also several displays recreating scenes from the history of firefighting.
Everything is well presented, and there is a quiet sense of seriousness about the place. The museum is housed in the historic Kılıç Ali Paşa Su Sarnıcı, a water reservoir dating from the 18th century. The historic setting works surprisingly well with the collection, and there is a clear sense that the museum knows its subject without making the whole thing feel overly formal.
The history of firefighting is also part of the history of Istanbul. The city has suffered many major fires over the centuries, and the development of the fire brigade is closely tied to the city's buildings and its changing urban landscape. That gives the museum a wider story to tell than you might expect from a museum about firefighting.
Unfortunately, all the information at the Firefighting Museum in Istanbul is in Turkish. That means you'll miss some of the finer details if you don't read the language, but the exhibitions still work surprisingly well on their own. The objects and displays give you plenty to look at and enough context to get a sense of what you're seeing - and if you're a professional in the field, you probably won't need much explanation anyway.
There is also the practical side of things. Admission is free, and the museum is only about 50 metres from the Cat Museum. That was enough to make me think I might as well have a look. I hadn't planned to visit a firefighting museum, but when it was free and practically next door to the museum I had actually come to see, why not?
It turned out to be a good decision. I spent about half an hour there, and although I don't see myself coming back specifically to study firefighting equipment, I was glad to have discovered this rather different piece of Istanbul's history.
So if you're going to the Cat Museum anyway, walk the 50 metres up the hill and have a look at İBB İtfaiye Müzesi as well. You don't have to be a firefighter.
