Istanbul Modern Review: Is It Worth Visiting?

Tre personer smiler foran Istanbul Modern, en moderne bygning oplyst om natten. Stemningen er afslappet og venlig.

Istanbul Modern sits right by the water, surrounded by the Galataport shopping complex in Tophane - and it’s hard not to stop for a moment the first time you see the building designed by Renzo Piano.

Everything feels open, bright and well thought out. Large glass facades, lines that reflect the water, and a sense of calm you don’t find in many places in Istanbul.

The spaces are big and airy, and in several spots you have views of the Bosphorus as you move through the exhibitions.

That view, however, is not always guaranteed. If one or more cruise ships are docked at Galataport, they can effectively block the entire experience.

The same goes for the museum’s restaurant, which otherwise relies heavily on that view - and without it, it quickly becomes a rather expensive experience without much of a wow factor.

On the other hand, the rooftop terrace is worth mentioning on its own. From up here, you get one of the better viewpoints in the area - open, calm and with the city and water all around you.

Istanbul Modern is dedicated to modern and contemporary art - featuring both Turkish and international artists.

Part of the exhibition is permanent - especially sections from the museum’s own collection - while other exhibitions change regularly. It creates a good balance: something that’s always there, and at the same time a reason to come back.

Some exhibitions hit harder than others, but the overall level is high, and everything is curated in a way that’s easy to follow.

It’s not heavy.

But it’s not exactly street-level either.

You can easily engage with it - but you also feel that it’s a museum.

That slightly polished, curated feeling where everything is carefully put together.

So yes - it’s accessible.

But also a little bit elitist.

We visited the museum ourselves this April - my partner and I, together with a couple of friends.

It was one of those days when Istanbul seems to pause for a moment. Sunshine, clear light, and not too many people. We walked slowly through the exhibitions, took our time, and ended up both by the windows overlooking the water - and up on the rooftop terrace, where the view is actually one of the highlights of the visit.

And that’s probably where my own experience starts to split a bit.

Because I do think it’s a great place.

Really.

But I also left with a slight feeling that it didn’t quite hit as hard as I had expected.

Not because it’s bad - quite the opposite.

But because Istanbul is… Istanbul.

There’s a constant flow of free art exhibitions across the city - some small, others quite extensive. With that as a reference, Istanbul Modern suddenly feels very polished.

More museum. Less edge.

So, is it worth a visit?

Yes - without a doubt.

If you’re even slightly interested in modern art, it definitely makes sense to stop by.

And if not - the building, the light and the setting alone might be enough.

That is, if it’s not all blocked by the cruise ships mentioned earlier.

It’s a place that works.

A place that feels complete.

But maybe not the place in Istanbul that will surprise you the most.
