Can you wear shorts in Istanbul? Do women need to wear a headscarf? And what should you wear when visiting a mosque?
If you’re planning a trip to Istanbul, these are some of the most common questions you’ll have.
The good news is that Istanbul is a modern, cosmopolitan city where people dress in many different ways. In most situations, you can wear exactly what you would wear in any other European city.
There are, however, a few occasions where dressing a little more conservatively is both practical and respectful.

What to Wear in Istanbul
Every now and then I’m asked:
“What should I wear in Istanbul?”
The short answer is simple: Istanbul is a modern city where you can generally dress as you would in any major European destination.
That said, it’s worth keeping a few local customs in mind.
Everyday Sightseeing
Istanbul is a multicultural city with everything from trendy neighbourhoods to more traditional districts.
Most visitors won’t have any issues wearing normal summer clothing. However, very short shorts, mini skirts or highly revealing outfits may attract unwanted attention - especially in more conservative neighbourhoods such as Aksaray, Eyüpsultan and Üsküdar.
For Women
Trousers, dresses, skirts and shorts are all perfectly normal.
Short-sleeved tops are acceptable in most places.
There is no requirement to wear a headscarf or cover your hair in public.
For Men
T-shirts, polo shirts and shorts are common throughout the city.
In more traditional neighbourhoods, knee-length shorts are usually the better choice.
Save tank tops and very short shorts for the beach.
Whatever you wear, comfortable shoes are highly recommended. Chances are you’ll be walking several kilometres every day.
Visiting Mosques in Istanbul
When visiting a mosque - such as the Blue Mosque or Süleymaniye Mosque - a more conservative dress code applies.
Women
Hair should be covered with a headscarf.
Shoulders and legs should be covered.
Men
Long trousers are recommended.
Wear a T-shirt or shirt with sleeves.
All visitors must remove their shoes before entering a mosque, so many people find it more comfortable to wear socks.
Practical Tips
Carry a lightweight scarf in your bag. It can protect you from the sun and is useful when visiting mosques.
Follow the signs at mosque entrances. They clearly explain the expected dress code.
Respect local customs. It helps create a better experience for both visitors and worshippers.
What About the Beach?
Bikinis and swimwear are, of course, perfectly acceptable on the beach.
However, if you’re leaving the beach to visit a supermarket, café or use public transport, it’s considered polite to put on a T-shirt, dress or shorts first.
Every year there are stories about tourists being shouted at for walking around the city wearing nothing but swimwear. It only takes a moment to cover up - and it’s a simple way to show respect for local customs.
Whether you’re exploring historic Sultanahmet, shopping in Kadıköy or visiting one of Istanbul’s beautiful mosques, dressing appropriately is easy. In most cases, common sense and a little cultural awareness are all you need.
