A Sunset Yacht Cruise on the Bosphorus - Was It Worth It?

Sunset over a waterfront skyline with mosque domes and minarets silhouetted above calm water, glowing orange sky.

Last night, my partner and I joined a yacht cruise on the Bosphorus together with a couple of friends. The idea was simple enough - spend a few relaxing hours on the water while the sun set over Istanbul. What followed was a pleasant evening with wine, snacks, good company and some of the most beautiful views the city has to offer.

We booked the experience through this link here on the website, and the price was 2,500 TL per person. The cruise lasted around two hours, which felt just about right. Long enough to enjoy the Bosphorus and its many landmarks, but not so long that the evening started to drag.

With space for around 12-14 guests, the atmosphere felt intimate and relaxed. Most of the people on board were international visitors exploring Istanbul, while a few were local residents. The crew were friendly, attentive and made everyone feel welcome from the moment we stepped aboard.

The cruise promised unlimited wine, and to be fair, it delivered. Our glasses were rarely empty for long before someone appeared to offer a refill. The wine was not particularly memorable, but both the red and white were perfectly drinkable everyday wines - exactly the sort of thing you would expect on a relaxed evening cruise rather than a wine-tasting event.

Snacks were served throughout the journey, and overall we felt that everything had been thoughtfully organised. At no point did we feel that anything was missing.

The only aspect that did not quite match our own expectations was the amount of commentary during the cruise. My partner, our friends and I had come as much for the conversation, the sunset and the atmosphere as for the sightseeing. More than once we found ourselves pausing our conversations while our host for the evening, Şimon, launched into another story.

That said, it was clear that his enthusiasm came from a genuine passion for both Istanbul and its history. As someone who can easily spend a little too long talking about Istanbul myself, I could hardly hold that against him.

As a history enthusiast, I also appreciated the care he took when discussing the city’s past. In particular, it was refreshing to hear someone explain the transition from the Roman Empire to what is commonly referred to today as the Byzantine Empire without falling into some of the usual historical oversimplifications.

Overall, we had a genuinely enjoyable evening on the Bosphorus. Not only because of the wine or the snacks, but because Istanbul simply looks extraordinary from the water. As the sun slowly sank towards the horizon, the shores of the Bosphorus were bathed in golden light. Palaces, mosques, fortresses and waterfront mansions drifted past as the city gradually transformed from day into night.

It is evenings like these that remind you why the Bosphorus remains one of Istanbul’s greatest attractions.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Two hours on the Bosphorus at sunset, in good company and with a glass of wine in hand, is one of those experiences that Istanbul does exceptionally well.
