If you’re travelling to Türkiye with medication, there’s usually no reason to panic. Most people travel with prescription medicine without any problems at all.

But there are certain types of medication that are worth checking a bit more carefully before your flight - especially ADHD medication, strong painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and some psychiatric medication.

These are also the types of medication that travellers most often seem to worry about before coming to Türkiye.

Typically, this includes things like:

  • ADHD medication

(such as Ritalin, Concerta, Medikinet or Elvanse/Vyvanse)

  • Strong painkillers/opioids

(such as morphine, oxycodone, tramadol or fentanyl)

  • Sleeping medication

  • Anti-anxiety medication

  • Certain psychiatric medications

That does not automatically mean the medication is illegal in Türkiye. In many cases, it simply means you should travel a bit more prepared and make sure your documentation is in order before leaving home.

If you travel with any of the above, it’s generally a good idea to:

  • Keep the medication in its original pharmacy packaging

  • Carry it in your hand luggage

  • Bring enough for the whole trip - plus a little extra in case of delays

  • Carry a doctor’s letter in English with your name, medication and dosage

  • Keep your documents somewhere easy to reach during the journey

Apostille/legalisation used to be mentioned almost everywhere as a standard requirement. Today, it seems to depend more on the type of medication, the length of your stay and how much medication you are bringing with you.

If you are unsure about your specific medication, it’s usually smartest to contact your local Turkish embassy or consulate before traveling.

In short:

  • Check the rules for your specific medication before your trip

  • ADHD medication and psychiatric medication often require extra documentation

  • Keep your medication in original packaging

  • Bring a doctor’s letter in English when needed

  • If you are unsure, contact the Turkish embassy or consulate before travelling - not at the airport

At the end of the day, it is always your own responsibility to make sure your medication can legally be brought into Türkiye.
