Istanbul certainly isn’t short on things to see. Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern, Dolmabahçe, museums, Bosphorus cruises and guided tours - the list can quickly get pretty long. And so can the various ticket queues, eating into both your time and your bank balance.
But there is actually a way to make the whole thing run a little more smoothly: Istanbul E-Pass.
What is Istanbul E-Pass?
Istanbul E-Pass is a digital sightseeing pass that gives you access to a wide range of attractions and experiences across Istanbul. Depending on the package you choose, this can include places such as Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and Dolmabahçe Palace, as well as Bosphorus cruises and various guided tours.
The pass is on your phone, and at many attractions you simply use the QR code at the entrance. Some attractions and guided tours do need to be booked in advance, though, so it’s worth checking how it works for the places you want to visit.
Is Istanbul E-Pass worth it?
I would actually compare Istanbul E-Pass to an unlimited ride pass at an amusement park. If you only want to go on a couple of rides, individual tickets make more sense. But if you want the freedom to go on whatever you fancy, an unlimited pass makes much more sense.
And Istanbul E-Pass works in much the same way.
I’m not someone who likes to plan every single hour of a visit to Istanbul. Part of the fun of the city is getting a little lost, stumbling across somewhere you hadn’t planned to visit, catching a ferry simply because it happens to be at the pier, or sitting down for a coffee and staying longer than you intended.
And this is actually where I think E-Pass has another advantage. You don’t have to decide exactly which of the included experiences you are going to use. If you suddenly fancy adding another attraction along the way, you already have the pass on your phone.
Who is Istanbul E-Pass for?
I think the pass is particularly interesting if it’s your first time in Istanbul and you want to visit several of the classic sights. But of course, whether you get your money’s worth has less to do with how many times you’ve been to Istanbul and more to do with how you want to experience the city.
If several of the major attractions are already on your list and you also like having the freedom to add something extra along the way, E-Pass can make a lot of sense.
If, on the other hand, you’re more likely to jump on a ferry, wander through the streets, settle down at a café or simply see where the day takes you, you’ll naturally get less out of a sightseeing pass. In that case, you can find plenty of inspiration here on this blog - mitistanbul.dk/en
