29 October is one of the most important dates in the Turkish calendar. It is Republic Day, or Cumhuriyet Bayramı, marking the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president.

Republic Day is celebrated throughout the country with flags, music, speeches and parades. Streets and buildings are decorated in red and white, children take part in marches, and the celebrations often continue into the evening with concerts and fireworks.

Here in Istanbul, the approach of Republic Day is hard to miss. Turkish flags appear everywhere, and there seem to be even more pictures of Atatürk than usual. The city takes

on a distinctly festive atmosphere as the anniversary approaches.

The celebrations begin on the afternoon of 28 October, when the official half-day holiday starts. Together with the public holiday on 29 October, this gives people a day and a half to celebrate the founding of the republic.

Visiting Istanbul on 29 October

If you are visiting Istanbul around Republic Day, there are a few practical things worth keeping in mind.

The city can be particularly busy, with large crowds at public events and on public transport. Parades, concerts and other celebrations may also lead to road closures, diversions and changes to traffic.

Museums and major attractions are worth checking in advance, too. There may be special admission arrangements, including free entry for Turkish citizens at selected museums, which can mean more visitors than usual. Check the official websites for opening hours and ticket conditions before setting out. Booking tickets in advance can save time where advance reservations are available.

Banks and public offices are closed on 29 October. Exchange offices and shops may operate with different opening hours, so it is worth exchanging money or taking care of essential errands beforehand.

If you are planning to visit Istanbul at the end of October, Republic Day is an important part of the city's calendar - and one that affects everyday life as well as the celebrations.
